Accurate weighted grade calculation

Most courses weight assignments differently. A simple average of your scores will not match your real grade. This tool calculates the true weighted average so you know exactly where you stand.

The weighted grade calculator computes your overall course grade when assignments carry different percentage weights. Add each grade and weight in a clear row to get your weighted average percentage and letter grade. Used by students tracking grades across homework, quizzes, midterms, and finals with different syllabus weights.

Weighted grading tips

Get the most accurate result with these habits.

  • Always use your syllabus weight percentages, not your own estimates — even small differences change the final grade.
  • If your weights add to more or less than 100%, the tool still works — it calculates proportionally.
  • Track your grade mid-semester by entering only completed assignments and their weights so far.

Frequently asked questions

Do my weights need to add up to 100%?>
No. The calculator divides the weighted sum by the total weight you enter, so it works correctly whether your weights add to 100%, 80%, or any other total.
What is the difference between a weighted grade and a simple average?>
A simple average treats every assignment equally. A weighted grade gives more impact to assignments with higher weights. If your final exam is worth 50% of your grade, a simple average of all scores would significantly undervalue it.
Can I enter letter grades instead of percentages?>
This tool requires percentage scores. Convert your letter grade to a percentage first using the Percentage to Letter Grade converter — for example, a B is approximately 85%.
How do I handle an assignment I have not taken yet?>
Leave it out entirely. Only enter completed assignments. The tool calculates your current weighted average from whatever pairs you provide.
